Platelet Precautions

1. Platelet precautions to minimize bleeding.

To minimize and/or prevent bleeding of the client with a low platelet count the patient/caregiver should be instructed in platelet precautions.

1. No I.M. injections

2. No rectal temperatures or suppositories

3. No medications containing aspirin

4. USE AN ELECTRIC RAZOR ONLY

5. Apply pressure to venipunctures for at least 10 minutes.

6. Use saline only for flushes.  NO HEPARIN

7. Use toothettes or a very soft toothbrush for oral hygiene.

8. Use caution in nail cutting.  Use of a Podiatrist is preferred.

9. Notify the physician of any unusual or prolonged bleeding or increased bruising.

10. Use caution to avoid bumping self, falling and injuring self in any other way.
