Wash hands thoroughly.
Roll insulin bottle gently.
Cleanse top of bottle with alcohol swab.
Pull plunger of syringe back the number units of insulin to be injected.
Insert needle into the bottle and inject air.
Invert the bottle and slowly withdraw prescribed amount of insulin, being sure needle is under the fluid level.
Check syringe for air bubbles.
Prepare the injection site by swabbing center of area with alcohol and rotating outward in a circular manner about two inches.
Inject needle into skin using a quick, firm motion at a 90-degree angle. (Very thin patients may use a 45-degree angle.)
Inject insulin slowly into tissue.
Cover tip of needle with alcohol pad and withdraw needle, holding swab over site briefly.
Dispose of needle in a impermeable container.
